Author Biography

     Jim Murphy was born on August 25, 1947 in Newark, New Jersey. He was educated at Rutgers where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1970. Murphy worked several construction jobs after college. He then worked for Clarion for eight years before deciding to become a writer. The author and his wife, Alison, have two sons, Mike and Ben. His hobbies include cooking, collecting turn of the century postcards of ships, reading, gardening, and searching for the perfect hamburger and french fries. 
     Murphy is well-known for writing fiction and nonfiction and one of his goals in writing is to show that children throughout history have done amazing and heroic things. The author's "Across America on an Emigrant Train" is an ALA Best Book for Young Adults and the 1994 Orbis Pictus Winner. "The Great Fire" was a Newbery Honor Book, the Orbis Pictus Winner for 1996 and an ALA Notable Children's Book. "American Plague" received a Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award, a Newbery Honor, the Orbis Pictus Award and it was an ALA Notable Children's Book in 2004.
