He never went to college and worked as a newspaper reporter for many years. He went to work for the publisher Edward Stratemeyer, who soon put him to work writing juvenile detective stories. He also wrote some scripts for the TV show Bonanza and some comedies and dramas for CBS in the 1960s. He was nominated for an Academy Award for the documentary Herring Hunt in 1953.
