Walker (aka Sally Fleming, Sally MacArt Walker and Sally Macart Walker) was born in East Orange, New Jersey on October 16, 1954. She earned her B.A. at Upsala College in 1975. Before beginning her writing career, Walker worked as a children's book buyer for a book store, children's literature consultant, children's book specialist and for a short time as an adjunct instructor for Northern Illinois University. Walker received the Robert F. Sibert Informational Book award for Secrets Of A Civil War Submarine in 2006. She enjoys hiking, reading, cooking, and gardening.
