Shel Silverstein Website:www.shelsilverstein.com Birthplace: Chicago, IL USA Author Biography Shel Silverstein was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 25, 1930. He died in Key West on May 10, 1999. Silverstein attended the University of Illinois in Chicago, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and Roosevelt University but was drafted into the Army in 1953 before he could graduate. He worked as a cartoonist, a playwright, a singer, and a composer of popular music. Perhaps his best known song is "A Boy Named Sue," recorded by Johnny Cash. The author was sometimes known as Uncle Shelby. He had a daughter Shoshanna who died at age seven and a son Matthew. Silverstein was best known for his humorous poetry. "Light in the Attic" was a SLJ Best Book in 1981. "The Missing Piece Meets the Big O" was a Children's Choice Book for 1982. In 2002 he was elected to the Country Music Songwriter's Hall of Fame.
