His father was a scientist and encouraged his interest in the natural world. Jenkins received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Arts Degree from the School of Design at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. The author is married to author and illustrator Robin Page, and they are the parents of three children. Jenkins and his wife sometimes collaborate on children's books. Jenkins is best known for his nonfiction about the natural world with distinctive cut paper and collage illustrations. "The Top of the World: Climbing Mount Everest" won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Nonfiction Award in 1999 and it was a 2000 Orbis Pictus Honor Book and an ALA Notable Children's Book.
