He was educated at Yale University where he took a course with Maurice Sendak who inspired him to pursue a career in children's books. Zelinsky also has a graduate degree in painting from Tyler School of Art. The author/illustrator and his wife, Deborah, are the parents of two daughters. Zelinsky is best known for his picture books based on fairy tales. His "Hansel and Gretel" was a Caldecott Honor Book in 1985, as was "Rumpelstiltskin" in 1987 and "Swamp Angel" in 1995.
