She worked as Director of Development at Whitman College and Director of Foundation Relations at the Oregon State University Foundation. She and her husband, artist Andrew Thomas, have two children, Rebekah and Dimitri. She is known primarily for her picture books. "Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt" won the IRA Award in 1994.
