She was educated at Rutgers University and Washington Psychoanalytic Institute. Viorst has worked as an editor of children's books. The author and her husband, Milton, are the parents of three sons. They also have three grandchildren. Her hobbies include cooking, watching movies and volunteering at a hospice. Viorst is best known for writing books for children and adults, poetry and musicals.
