Wilson Rawls Birthplace: Scraper, OK USA Author Biography Wilson Rawls was born on September 24, 1913 in Scraper, Oklahoma. His mother home schooled him and his sisters when they were elementary age. He later attended school for a while, but dropped out in 8th grade at the start of the Great Depression. Rawls worked as a carpenter, handyman, and construction worker in South America, Canada and Alaska. During this time he first began to write stories, but his lack of formal training in spelling and grammar kept them unsold. He burned all of his old manuscripts before marrying his wife Sophie. When she found this out, she asked that he rewrite one of them. Rawls is now well known for his acclaimed middle grade fiction, "Summer of the Monkeys" and "Where the Red Fern Grows."
