Allen Say Birthplace: Yokohama, Japan Most recent address:Portland, OR USA Author Biography Allen Say was born on August 28, 1937 in Yokohama, Japan. At twelve he apprenticed himself to the cartoonist, Noro Shinpei. He was educated at the Chouinard Art Institute, the Los Angeles Art Center, the University of California at Berkeley and the San Francisco Art Institute. Say has worked as an illustrator and photographer. He is married and has one daughter. His hobbies include fly fishing and collecting rare children's books. The author is known for writing books about overcoming cultural and physical stereotypes, agism and aging, and questions about adoption. "The Boy of the Three-Year Nap" won a Caldecott Honor in 1989.
