Gary D. Schmidt Birthplace: Hicksville, NY Author Biography Gary D. Schmidt was born in Hicksville, New York in 1957. He graduated from Gordon College with a degree in English. He earned an MA in English literature and a Ph.D in medieval literature from the University of Illinois. Schmidt is a professor of English at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, a medievalist, country squire, father of six children and an author. Lizzie Bright And The Buckminster Boys received a Newbery Honor and a Michael L. Printz Honor in 2005 and in 2008 Wednesday Wars received a Newbery Honor.
