She has master's degrees from The Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College (Vermont) and form the University of Pittsburgh School of Library and Information Science specializing in children's services. Nelson received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Point Park University in conjunction with delivering the 2006 commencement address. Nelson has taught English and writing and the secondary and university levels. She has been a reporter for a daily newspaper, a bookseller, a school librarian, a member of the Randolph Caldecott Committee and the John Newbery Award Committee. No Crystal Stair was awarded the 2013 Coretta Scott King Author Honor and Bad News For Outlaws was awarded the 2010 Coretta Scott King Author Award, Lerner Publishing Group created the Vaunda Micheaux Nelson Scholarship to honor her many contributions to diversity in children's books.
